The OpenLab will host the international final of the CIVIS Sustainability Challenge, bringing together selected student teams from across the CIVIS Alliance to present their solutions to the 2026 theme: “Thermal comfort for a just, low-carbon and budget-resilient university system.” The event will mark the final presentations and the award ceremony.
The C.I.V.I.S. Sustainability Challenge (Creative, Innovative, Visionary, Interdisciplinary, and Socially responsible) is an interdisciplinary, challenge-based learning experience connecting university resources towards developing impactful solutions to real-world challenges. Developed within the European Civic University Alliance, it is coordinated by the Université libre de Bruxelles and implemented across partner universities including Université libre de Bruxelles, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, University of Glasgow, Makerere University Kampala- Uganda and Eduardo Mondlane University.
The project addresses the growing need for hands-on, socially responsible education that bridges teaching, research, and societal impact. It engages students from diverse disciplines to work alongside local stakeholders such as NGOs, municipalities, and civil society organisations in intensive challenge-based formats combining academic knowledge, civic engagement, and innovation. Promising solutions will be encouraged to further develop through incubators and mentoring programmes, and Open Labs.
Part of the Open Labs, the Challenge provides a scalable model for interdisciplinary, participatory learning across the CIVIS Alliance.
Bringing together students, academic staff, and external partners, the initiative fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, strengthens sustainability skills, and promotes actionable solutions to real-world challenges. Through its participatory and challenge-based methodology, it contributes to civic engagement, cross-cultural exchange, and the development of scalable models for sustainability-oriented education across Europe.
