Openlab.brussels is pleased to have collaborated with ScienceUs in co‑organising days of exchange, reflection, and collective learning dedicated to the role of citizen science in climate change adaptation.
Below, we share the text published by ScienceUs, which provides a detailed overview of these inspiring and thought‑provoking moments.
On 12 March 2026, the ScienceUs event, “From citizen science to decision-making for climate change adaptation”, brought together citizen science practitioners, policymakers, funders, researchers, and public actors to explore a key question:
How can citizen science be better translated, valued, and used in decision-making for climate change adaptation?
Throughout the day, participants engaged in inspiring presentations, policy-oriented discussions, interactive exchanges, and valuable networking opportunities. From the introduction of the ScienceUs project and its five supported initiatives to the perspectives shared by funding bodies, policy actors, and Brussels-based initiatives, the event created a meaningful space for dialogue across sectors and levels of governance.
A central theme running through the day was the need to strengthen the connection between citizen-generated knowledge and public decision-making through trust, recognition, practical pathways for evidence uptake, and more inclusive policymaking processes.
The event also fostered peer learning and hands-on exchange through the World Café, where participants shared experiences, practices, and reflections on citizen science methodologies, upscaling pathways, and policy impact.
The exchange continued on 13 March 2026 with a dedicated workshop bringing together the five ScienceUs projects for a more focused moment of collaboration and peer learning. Building on the discussions initiated during the Brussels event, the workshop offered space to reflect more deeply on shared experiences, citizen science methodologies, upscaling pathways, and the challenge of strengthening policy impact. This additional session further highlighted the value of cross-project dialogue and collaboration within the ScienceUs community.
A special thank you to OpenLab.brussels for supporting these meaningful exchanges!
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this rich, timely, and inspiring conversation in Brussels.
